Trident Replacement Consultation and Referendum

Please comment here - as the government's figures don't add up but also a fraud may be being perpetrated on the British people. Given how many irregularities have now occurred, I have asked Greenpeace to refer the UK Government to the United Nations.

● Do you support the UK government being referred to the UN?

● All replies will be most welcome, from a simple "Yes" (or No!) to fuller responses.

Sounds great in principle but on what legal basis would the UN get involved? Surely if the UK government is making decisions based on false accounting then the best way to get the decision overturned is judicial review? Our judges have shown themselves quite willing to challenge the government in recent times.
Hi Hazel

I think the UN should be interested in the round given the UK government's division over the non-proliferation treaty. I'm less sure that judicial review will be attractive as that's where we came in - after the courts had ruled that it was OK not to consult over Trident replacement. That still leaves the National Audit Office and the Public Accounts Committee. I will be asking their chair, Margaret Hodge, to call this in.

David Seddon posted to this site on 31 July:

There are several different estimates of the cost of full replacement of the Trident system - ranging from £20 billion to £100 billion. If the Government systematically underestimates the real cost, there could be a major issue of fraud and deception. Most estimates of like for like replacement and necessary upgrading exceed £50 billion. It would be good if Greenpeace were in a position not only to provide clear and reliable estimates of replacement for different components of the system and make them public, but mount a campaign to alert the public to the issues involved.
